Uttarakhand Avalanche LIVE: India Rescues 47 Workers with Eight Still Trapped After Avalanche | N18G

A total of 47 workers were rescued in India’s mountainous state of Uttarakhand after they were trapped under snow following a massive avalanche, while efforts to find the eight remaining survivors are underway, officials said on Saturday (March 1). Indian Army soldiers were seen carrying the injured victims on stretchers as they brought the rescued workers to Joshimath military hospital for further medical treatment. The avalanche occurred following heavy snowfall near a highway in the state’s Chamoli region, adjoining Tibet, and less than 5 km (3 miles) from the Hindu temple of Badrinath, which is visited by hundreds of thousands of devotees every year. Uttarakhand, which is located in the Himalayas, is increasingly prone to flash floods and landslides due to rising global temperatures, and environmentalists have urged a review of power projects and other development work there.
