At a press briefing in Washington DC, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth outlined Washington’s next steps on Venezuela.
Rubio said the US has begun seizing sanctioned Venezuelan oil tankers and will sell the oil at market rates, controlling revenues to prevent corruption and support the Venezuelan people.
He explained the plan will unfold in three phases: stabilisation, economic recovery and a political transition, including possible amnesties and rebuilding civil society.
Rubio said US sanctions and naval enforcement give Washington leverage and rejected claims there is no clear strategy.
Hegseth defended the military operations in the Caribbean and North Atlantic, saying they are part of ongoing global US deployments and come at no extra cost to taxpayers.
Both officials stressed the measures are aimed at cutting illicit oil flows, increasing pressure on Venezuelan authorities and shaping the country’s political future.
