Ukraine said Russia fired a record 537 missiles and drones in “massive” overnight attacks.
Air defenses repelled 475 of the strikes, with 249 downed and 226 going lost on radar, the Ukrainian Air Force reported Sunday on Telegram. Six locations in Ukraine were hit and debris fell in eight places, it said, without indicating where or whether there were any casualties.
Russia targeted seven regions across Ukraine including Lviv, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzia, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said in a post on the X platform.
A Ukrainian F-16 fighter pilot, Maksym Ustymenko, was killed after downing seven air targets, the Air Force said. In all, Russia fired 477 Shahed attack and simulator drones as well as 60 missiles, including four Kinzhal, seven Iskanders, and 46 cruise missiles.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said later on Telegram that it conducted a large-scale strike including with drones and the Kinzhal hypersonic missile targeting Ukraine’s “military-industrial complex and oil refineries,” without elaborating. “All designated targets were hit,” it said.
Russia has intensified missile and drone attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks as President Vladimir Putin defies US and European calls to accept a ceasefire to allow for peace talks. Ukraine and Russia resumed direct negotiations last month for the first time since the early weeks of the 2022 invasion, and have met twice in Istanbul.
While negotiators agreed to conduct prisoner exchanges and to present memorandums setting out their proposals for ending the war, there has been no sign so far of a deal. Russia has continued to press hardline demands for Ukraine to surrender territory, something Kyiv has rejected.
Putin told reporters on Friday that the two sides had presented “absolutely opposing memorandums” but that a third round of talks was being prepared and Russia was willing to hold them again in Istanbul.
