US tariffs on steel and aluminium imports will be increased to 50 per cent, President Trump said as he doubled down on his global trade war.

The US president announced the raise from 25 per cent in a speech to workers at a US Steel plant in Pennsylvania on Friday night, claiming that it would “further secure” the industry.

Trump later confirmed the move on his Truth Social platform, adding that they would be “effective Wednesday, June 4”.
