President Donald Trump said he will direct several federal agencies to “reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt Alcatraz,” a facility that for decades was a federal prison and is now a national park.
Alcatraz, which was closed 60 years ago due to its crumbling infrastructure and high maintenance costs, “will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social Sunday, later telling reporters it was “just an idea” he had as federal judges pushed to ensure deported migrants had due process.
During a press conference Monday, he reiterated his plans for Alcatraz, saying in part, “We’ll see if we can bring it back in large form, add a lot.”
