Magda Goebbels became one of the most prominent women in Nazi Germany, presented by propaganda as a devoted wife, mother and symbol of the values promoted by the Third Reich. Yet her life followed a far more complicated path. Born in Berlin in 1901, she spent part of her childhood in Belgium, was raised for a time by a Jewish stepfather and, as a young woman, had a relationship with the Zionist Haim Arlosoroff. Years later, she would enter the innermost circles of the Nazi movement. This documentary traces Magda Goebbels’s remarkable transformation, from her marriage to wealthy industrialist Günther Quandt to her relationship with Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s future Minister of Propaganda. After marrying Goebbels in 1931, with Adolf Hitler serving as a witness, Magda increasingly assumed the role of an unofficial first lady of Nazi Germany. Her family became part of the regime’s carefully constructed public image, while her six children with Joseph Goebbels frequently appeared alongside Hitler. Behind that image, however, the Goebbels marriage was troubled. Joseph’s relationship with Czech actress Lída Baarová brought the couple close to separation before Hitler personally intervened. Magda also had relationships outside the marriage, while remaining closely connected to the Nazi elite. As the Second World War turned against Germany, Magda occasionally expressed private doubts about Hitler, but she never broke with the regime. In April 1945, with Soviet forces closing in on central Berlin, she took her six children into the Führerbunker and rejected opportunities to send them to safety. Her final decisions would forever define her historical legacy.
