Ivan Frolov was one of the senior commanders of the Russian National Liberation Army (RONA), better known as the Kaminski Brigade, a collaborationist force that fought alongside Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Originally an officer in the Red Army, he was captured during the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 before joining the German-backed Lokot Autonomy, where he rose through the ranks under the leadership of Bronislav Kaminski. As chief of staff and later head of operations, Frolov played an important role in transforming RONA into a more organized military formation. In 1944, after the brigade was incorporated into the Waffen-SS, he was sent with his men to Warsaw during the Warsaw Uprising. There, RONA units became associated with some of the worst crimes committed against civilians in the Ochota district, where widespread looting, violence, and abuse accompanied German efforts to suppress the uprising. The conduct of the brigade drew criticism even from some German commanders, who regarded its discipline as completely out of control. Following Germany’s defeat in 1945, Frolov was captured by American forces before being transferred to the Soviet Union. During the investigation conducted by SMERSH, he initially denied responsibility for crimes committed by his unit. However, during his 1946 trial before the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the Soviet Union, he admitted guilt while continuing to argue that his men had simply followed orders. The court rejected his defence, bringing an end to his military career and public life. This documentary examines Ivan Frolov’s life, the history of the Kaminski Brigade, the German-sponsored Lokot Autonomy, and the role of collaborationist forces on the Eastern Front. It also explores the Warsaw Uprising, the events in the Ochota district, post-war investigations, and the legal proceedings that followed the collapse of Nazi Germany, placing Frolov’s story within the broader history of occupation, collaboration, and accountability during the Second World War.
