Fritz Fischer documentary explores the story of a doctor at Ravensbrück concentration camp who became directly involved in medical experiments carried out during the Second World War. Once trained to heal, Fischer chose instead to serve the SS under Heinrich Himmler, assisting in a series of experiments on prisoners that had no therapeutic purpose and caused lasting harm.
At Ravensbrück, female prisoners—many of them young members of the Polish resistance—were subjected to invasive surgical procedures without consent. Bones were deliberately fractured, muscles and nerves damaged, and wounds intentionally infected to study disease progression. Some operations were carried out with little or no effective anesthesia, leaving victims conscious during procedures. These experiments were presented as scientific research, but in reality, they reflected a system in which medicine was subordinated to ideology and power. Fischer worked closely with senior SS physician Karl Gebhardt and participated in these procedures from beginning to end. His role included assisting in operations, monitoring outcomes, and contributing to records later used to justify the experiments. The victims, often referred to as “Rabbits,” suffered permanent disability, chronic pain, and in some cases death. After the war, Fischer was arrested and brought before the Nuremberg Doctors’ Trial, where evidence of his actions was examined alongside those of other Nazi physicians. He was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Although initially sentenced to life imprisonment, his sentence was later reduced, and he was released after only a few years. This documentary examines how a trained doctor became part of a system that abandoned all medical ethics—and how justice eventually reached those responsible.
