The Final Reckoning of the SS and Hungarian Nazi Collaborators

This documentary examines the events at Kamianets-Podilskyi in 1941, one of the earliest major atrocities against entire Jewish communities during the Holocaust. The story begins with the collapse of Czechoslovakia in March 1939, when Hungary occupied Subcarpathian Ruthenia, bringing a large Jewish population under Hungarian rule. As refugees arrived from elsewhere in Central Europe, the status of Jews unable to prove their Hungarian citizenship became increasingly precarious. Following Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, Hungary entered the conflict alongside Nazi Germany. Hungarian officials saw the rapidly changing situation in the east as an opportunity to remove Jews whose citizenship they refused to recognise. Families were detained and transported towards the border, with many ultimately forced into German-occupied territory. By late August, around 16,000 deportees had reached Kamianets-Podilskyi, in present-day western Ukraine. The sudden arrival of thousands of deportees created a crisis for the German occupation authorities. Friedrich Jeckeln, Higher SS and Police Leader for southern Russia, assembled German police units and auxiliaries for an operation outside the city. Between 27 and 29 August, approximately 23,600 people lost their lives, including those deported from Hungary and members of the local Jewish community. The film examines the chain of decisions behind the deportations and the roles played by Hungarian officials including Miklós Kozma, Prime Minister László Bárdossy and General Staff chief Henrik Werth, alongside Jeckeln and the German occupation authorities. It also follows the Soviet investigation and the post-war proceedings involving several of those responsible. The events at Kamianets-Podilskyi marked a significant turning point in the Holocaust, preceding the destruction of entire Jewish communities across German-occupied Eastern Europe.
