The Final Reckoning: How Czechs Dealt With Hitler’s Soldiers

In the final days of the Second World War in Europe, Prague remained under German occupation even as Allied armies closed in from east and west. On 5 May 1945, a call for help from Prague radio helped ignite an uprising that brought thousands of Czechs into the streets. Barricades appeared across the capital as resistance fighters, police officers and civilians challenged German forces that had controlled the city for more than six years.
This documentary follows the dramatic events of the Prague Uprising and the occupation that preceded it. It examines the German takeover of the Czech lands in 1939, the growing power of the Gestapo and SS, the persecution of Prague’s Jewish population, and the resistance that developed under increasingly severe German rule. It also traces the consequences of Operation Anthropoid, the attack on Reinhard Heydrich, and the reprisals that followed, including the destruction of Lidice and Ležáky. By May 1945, German soldiers were attempting to move west towards American lines rather than surrender to the advancing Soviet forces. In Prague, the insurgents faced German tanks and artillery with limited weapons until unexpected assistance arrived from the 1st Division of the Russian Liberation Army, associated with General Andrey Vlasov. The film reconstructs the final struggle for Prague, the negotiations between Czech representatives and General Rudolf Toussaint, the withdrawal of German forces, and the arrival of Soviet tanks on 9 May. It also follows the fate of SS commander Carl Friedrich von Pückler-Burghauss and Karl Hermann Frank, one of the most powerful figures of the occupation, as post-war Czechoslovakia began confronting those responsible for years of repression.
