Twenty Trinamool Congress MPs have merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) and pledged support to the NDA, but NCPI’s origins, leadership and decision-making are murky. Bytes from alleged founder Shantanu Dey and former president Shewly Kundu contradict each other. Dey says he made decisions but now hasn’t spoken to Kundu since 2025, Kundu says Shantanu isn’t the founder and is not a member.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury calls NCPI a Bangladeshi party born during protests against Sheikh Hasina and TMC MP Saugata Roy says the MPs have lost their honour by joining an unrecognized party to bypass the anti-defection law.
