Schwerer Gustav was the largest railway gun ever built and one of the most extraordinary artillery projects of the Second World War. Designed by the German company Krupp in the 1930s, the massive weapon was created to destroy the heavily fortified defenses of the French Maginot Line, which many military planners believed could not be penetrated by conventional artillery. What emerged was a machine unlike anything seen before in the history of warfare. This documentary explores the origins, construction, and combat use of Schwerer Gustav, also known as the Gustav Gun or Heavy Gustav. Measuring more than 47 metres in length and firing shells weighing up to seven tonnes, the weapon required around 500 men to operate and weeks of preparation before it could fire. Developed under the supervision of Krupp engineer Erich Müller and approved personally by Adolf Hitler, the gun became a symbol of the extreme scale and ambition of German wartime engineering. The film follows the gun’s development from the Krupp factories in Essen to its deployment during the Siege of Sevastopol in 1942, where it was used against some of the strongest Soviet fortifications on the Eastern Front. It examines the enormous logistical effort needed to transport and assemble the weapon, the role of the Wehrmacht heavy artillery units, and the impact of Schwerer Gustav during the battle for Crimea. The documentary also looks at the related Dora railway gun, Hitler’s fascination with giant artillery projects, and the growing debate within the German military over whether such enormous weapons had any real strategic value. Despite its record-breaking size and technical achievements, Schwerer Gustav ultimately became a symbol of the limits of military gigantism during the war.
