But behind these reformist claims lies a deeper political and legal debate. The proposed laws come at a time when Assam’s social fabric is already marked by anxieties over migration, religious conversion, and demographic change.
Critics say these bills could transform personal law into an instrument of surveillance and identity control, reinforcing communal fault lines under the guise of moral reform.
As the state prepares to table these bills in the November 2025 Assembly session, the larger question looms: Are these laws genuine social reforms or do they mark the next phase of Assam’s identity politics?
