The Iran war is no longer just a military conflict; it is now triggering a major economic crisis across the Gulf. From Qatar’s LNG exports and UAE tourism to Kuwait and Bahrain’s energy trade, Gulf economies are facing mounting pressure as tensions around the Strait of Hormuz disrupt global shipping and energy flows. Qatar, one of the world’s richest countries per capita, has been hit especially hard. Missile strikes on Ras Laffan, LNG disruptions, falling tourism and slowing business activity are exposing how vulnerable Gulf economies remain to instability in Hormuz. Meanwhile, oil prices have surged globally, US fuel costs have jumped and fears of a prolonged energy shock are growing. Gulf states are now scrambling to reduce dependence on the Strait of Hormuz as negotiations over Iran continue.

After threatening Iran and then abruptly pulling back again, Donald Trump says Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE urged him to hold off on military strikes, believing a deal with Tehran is still within reach. So are Gulf nations emerging as key mediators between Iran and the US — and what do they stand to gain from bridging the gulf?
