Between 1946 and 1958 the US conducted 67 nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands. The 1954 Castle Bravo bomb detonated at Bikini atoll remains the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated by the US and was 1,000 times more powerful than Hiroshima.

Severe radiation spread over hundreds of kilometers, including over the nearby Rongelap atoll. People there were unknowingly exposed to deadly radioactivity and confidential US documents revealed they were used for secret experiments.

The Rongelapese were only saved when Greenpeace offered to relocate them on the Rainbow Warrior in 1985.

The impacts of the toxic fallout are still being felt today and 40 years later, the ship is back to meet with those it rescued.

‘The Pacific’ is hosted by Johnson Raela and Alice Lolohea.
