The Supreme Court has delivered a significant ruling on Scheduled Caste status and religious conversion.
A bench of Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice Manmohan upheld an Andhra Pradesh High Court decision stating that a person who converts to Christianity or any religion outside Hinduism, Sikhism and Buddhism immediately loses Scheduled Caste status under the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950.
The case involved a man from the Madiga community who had converted to Christianity and later filed a complaint under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The Court ruled that conversion makes a person ineligible for SC benefits under the existing legal framework.
However, the larger debate is far from over. A separate case on extending SC status to Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims is currently pending before the Supreme Court, and a commission headed by former CJI K.G. Balakrishnan is examining the issue.
Here’s a full breakdown of what the judgment means.
