Buying privately from individuals on FaceBook marketplace or Craigslist or similar can save you even more money, but is riskier. You have to be really careful, I’ve done this multiple times but I prefer not to. Firstly be careful, meet in a safe location like outside a police station or public location.
Then, I check for 2 main things – no iCloud or corporate MDM activation locks, and secondly testing everything physical. So I’ll have the seller set it up in advance if they haven’t already so that I can use and access everything, I’ll restart the Mac, check every key, trackpad, webcam, dead pixels on the screen, it charges ok and the ports work fine, the speakers are ok etc.
