Reservation Policy Divide in Jammu and Kashmir | Students Fear Uncertain Future

The reservation debate in Jammu and Kashmir has intensified after the Centre’s decision to extend reservation benefits to several ethnic groups, including the Pahari community.

While open merit students argue that increasing reservations could impact opportunities and trigger migration and brain drain, communities benefiting from the quota system say they have faced decades of discrimination and deserve constitutional protection.

The issue has also exposed divisions within the ruling Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, with protests, emotional scenes inside the Assembly, and opposition criticism adding to the political pressure on the government led by Omar Abdullah.

As protests continue, many young people in the region say they are caught between competing demands for justice, representation, and opportunity.
