Remembering the ‘Revolutionary’ Pope Francis
April 2025
A Papacy of Firsts
Pope Francis broke centuries-old traditions the moment he stepped onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Eschewing the opulent papal garments for simpler attire, he greeted the world with a gentle “Buonasera” and bowed his head to receive the prayers of the faithful before offering his own blessing. These acts foreshadowed a papacy grounded in humility and service.
He became known for rejecting luxury, choosing to reside in the Vatican guesthouse rather than the lavish Apostolic Palace, and driving a modest vehicle. These choices sent powerful messages about the values he believed the Catholic Church should embody in the 21st century.
Champion of the Marginalised
Francis’s vision for the Church was one rooted in the peripheries. He called for a “poor Church for the poor,” and frequently spotlighted the suffering of migrants, the homeless, refugees, and prisoners. He advocated for social and economic reforms, often criticising the failings of global capitalism, which he said “kills” and “puts profit before people.”
One of his most powerful gestures came during his visit to the Italian island of Lampedusa in 2013, where he mourned the deaths of migrants who perished at sea, condemned the “globalisation of indifference,” and urged governments to adopt more humane immigration policies.
A Voice for Climate and Peace
Pope Francis was also an ardent environmental advocate. His 2015 encyclical *Laudato Si’* was a watershed moment in religious engagement with climate change. In it, he called the Earth “our common home” and urged global action to combat environmental degradation and protect the planet for future generations.
His calls for peace echoed across conflict zones. He acted as a mediator in the restoration of diplomatic ties between Cuba and the United States, and consistently condemned war, arms trading, and the suffering caused by global militarisation.
A Bridge-Builder in a Divided World
Francis often defied political and doctrinal expectations. He called for dialogue with other religions and encouraged unity among Christian denominations. His historic meetings with leaders of Islam, Judaism, and Eastern Orthodoxy aimed to foster peace and interfaith cooperation.
Within the Church, he pushed for a more pastoral approach to contentious issues. While upholding traditional teachings, he opened the door to discussions on topics such as LGBTQ+ inclusion, divorced and remarried Catholics, and clerical celibacy. Though not always successful in achieving doctrinal reform, he shifted the tone of the Church toward mercy and understanding.
Scandal, Reform, and Accountability
Pope Francis also faced immense challenges. The sexual abuse crisis within the Church tested his resolve and credibility. While critics accused him of acting too slowly, he implemented stronger protocols for reporting and accountability and defrocked several high-profile offenders. His efforts culminated in the establishment of a new Vatican tribunal dedicated to abuse cases and episcopal negligence.
He also tackled financial reform within the Vatican, seeking transparency and accountability in its historically opaque institutions. While obstacles and resistance remained, he made measurable progress toward modernising and cleaning up the Church’s finances.
A Legacy of Compassion and Courage
As the Catholic Church now enters a period of mourning and reflection, the legacy of Pope Francis remains etched in the hearts of millions. He inspired a new generation of Catholics and non-Catholics alike with his deep empathy, progressive thinking, and unrelenting focus on dignity for all human beings.
Whether it was embracing lepers, washing the feet of prisoners, or standing up to global powers, Francis embodied the Gospel not through grand gestures, but by living out Christ’s call to love and serve the least among us.
