Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue 2025 in New Delhi, Joel Kaplan, Chief Global Affairs Officer, Meta, USA, Pierroberto Folgiero, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Fincantieri, Italy, Marianne Demarchi, Chief Executive Officer, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Swift and S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs, India talked about how is foreign policy evolving amidst shifting global dynamics of trade and finance, and digital weaponisation. In conversation with Palki Sharma, Managing Editor, Firstpost, the panel also discussed how political decisions are shaping businesses and are being implicated by them.
When asked about India’s stance on weaponising trade and financial institutions and should tariffs be a part of India’s foreign policy, Jaishankar said, “Whether we like it or not, it is a reality. Countries use them (tariffs). In fact, if one looks at the last decade, we have seen a much greater weaponisation of pretty much any kind of capability or economic activity.” “At the end of the day for a government, for a commisar of the government, you fight for your business because your fighting for your employment,” he added.
