A political storm has erupted over newly appointed Education Minister Pralhad Joshi’s past remarks on the release of the 11 Bilkis Bano convicts.
During the Lok Sabha debate on the Public Examinations Amendment Bill, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to appoint Joshi, citing his 2022 comments on the remission granted to the convicts. Outside Parliament, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi escalated the attack, calling Joshi a “defender of rapists.”
The BJP hit back, with Pralhad Joshi accusing Priyanka Gandhi of spreading misinformation and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju calling her remarks “character assassination.”
