Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Malé for a two‑day State Visit (July 25–26) at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu, marking the first visit by a head of government since President Muizzu assumed office in November 2023.
He received a warm, ceremonial welcome at Velana International Airport and was personally greeted by the Maldivian President in a rare diplomatic gesture. The grand reception featured a guard of honour, national anthems of both countries, a 21‑gun salute, and enthusiastic chants of “Vande Mataram” from the Indian diaspora present at the airport.
PM Modi is the Guest of Honour at the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations on July 26, which also commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives.
This high-level visit signals a significant reset in ties between New Delhi and Malé, with focus areas including maritime security, economic partnerships, infrastructure, and regional stability under the Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership framework.
