Pakistani authorities have launched a crackdown on supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan ahead of planned nationwide protests by his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. PTI claims more than 1,000 supporters were arrested as security forces moved to block demonstrators demanding Khan’s release and opposing what the party calls a military-backed government. Police sealed entry and exit points of Lahore, preventing PTI vehicles from entering the city, including those carrying Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. The protests were scheduled to begin on December 26 at Liberty Chowk. Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023 and recently received a 17-year prison sentence in the Toshakhana corruption case.
