At least 26 people were killed and several others injured in a terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pahalgam on Tuesday, April 22. Security forces and medical teams were rushed to the area, which was cordoned off. Gunshots were heard in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley, as assailants opened fire on tourists. India’s External Affairs Ministry held a press conference a day after the killings.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Wednesday. The CCS decided to hold the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 in abeyance with immediate effect, until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism. The Attari-Wagah Border checkpost has also been closed with immediate effect. And, any Pakistani national currently in India under SVES visa has been asked to leave India in under 48 hours.
