Syria is marking a year since the overthrow of half a century of brutal dictatorship. Thousands have taken to the streets, and a military parade has been held in the capital Damascus to celebrate the moment when former President Bashar al-Assad was deposed by Islamist rebels. His regime fell to a lightning offensive led by the current interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa. It was hoped that the end of Syria’s 14-year civil war would bring relief and a measure of prosperity to the country – but rebuilding has barely started.
