Binyamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, has made a rare visit to the Gaza Strip during the 18-month war with Hamas.

Netanyahu travelled to northern Gaza on Tuesday, where he met Israeli troops, according to a statement released after the visit by his office.

The visit took place as Israel offered a new deal to Hamas that would involve a cessation of fighting, the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners and plans for postwar Gaza. Israel says it is exerting maximum pressure to secure the hostages’ release.
