Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp.
About the story: Lina Heydrich was the wife of Reinhard Heydrich, one of the most powerful and feared leaders of Nazi Germany during the Second World War. As the spouse of the man often called the “Butcher of Prague” and one of the chief architects of the Holocaust, Lina Heydrich remained a devoted supporter of the Nazi regime and its ideology even long after the war had ended. Lina was born Lina von Osten on 14 June 1911 in Fehmarn, Germany. A committed Nazi sympathizer from an early age, she joined the Nazi Party before Adolf Hitler came to power. In 1931 she met Reinhard Heydrich, a former naval officer who would soon rise rapidly within the SS under Heinrich Himmler. The couple married the same year, and Lina actively encouraged Heydrich’s career within the Nazi hierarchy. As Heydrich became one of the most powerful figures in the Third Reich, serving as head of the Gestapo, the Reich Security Main Office, and later as Acting Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, Lina lived with him in Prague and supported his work. During the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, Heydrich ruled with brutal repression, overseeing arrests, executions, and deportations that contributed to the Holocaust. On 27 May 1942, Heydrich was attacked in Prague by Czechoslovak resistance fighters Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš during Operation Anthropoid. He died from his wounds several days later. His death triggered brutal Nazi reprisals, including the destruction of the Czech village of Lidice. She later managed the Panenské Břežany estate. After the war Lina Heydrich was briefly detained but never convicted of crimes connected with the Nazi regime. Throughout her life she remained unapologetic about her husband’s role in the Nazi regime and continued to defend him publicly. Lina Heydrich died in 1985, leaving behind a legacy closely tied to one of the most notorious figures of the Holocaust.
