More than 1,600 people have been killed and thousands more injured in a major earthquake that hit the war-torn state of Myanmar and shook large parts of southeast Asia.
In the wake of the disaster Myanmar’s junta, which as run the country since 2021 and kept it isolated from much of the rest of the world, issued a rare appeal for help.
Several countries, including China, Russia and Malaysia, have dispatched rescue teams, while international aid agencies are gearing up for a highly complex relief effort.
