Ida Dalser remains one of the most controversial figures connected to Benito Mussolini’s early life. Long before Mussolini became the dictator of Fascist Italy, Dalser was an independent businesswoman who supported his political ambitions and later claimed to be his lawful wife. Their relationship, and the fate of their son Benito Albino Mussolini, became one of the most closely guarded secrets of the Fascist regime. Born in northern Italy in 1880, Ida Dalser built a successful career before meeting the young Benito Mussolini during his years as a socialist journalist. She provided financial support for his political activities at a time when his future remained uncertain. As Mussolini’s influence grew, however, his relationship with Dalser came to an abrupt end. After he rose to power following the March on Rome in 1922, the Fascist authorities sought to erase all public evidence of her claims and prevent any challenge to the carefully constructed image of Italy’s new leader.
