Mumbai Police have arrested Pune resident Fayyaz Nisar Hussain Premji for allegedly attempting a mass poisoning during the Muharram Ashura procession in Byculla.
According to police, the accused allegedly distributed poison-filled capsules disguised as painkillers and immunity boosters and even threw them into the crowd calling them “chocolates.” Investigators claim he had allegedly planned to target nearly 15,000 people participating in the procession.
Police recovered around 14,900 capsules allegedly filled with zinc phosphide, a highly toxic rat poison that releases deadly phosphine gas when ingested. Eleven people reportedly consumed the capsules and later fell ill, but all are now out of danger after treatment.
Investigators are probing a possible terror angle and international links, with the accused reportedly having worked in Iran and Iraq. A Mumbai court has remanded him to two days of police custody.
The incident has raised serious questions about security arrangements at large religious gatherings and whether a major tragedy was narrowly averted after a woman became suspicious and alerted the authorities.
