Four people were killed and nine others injured after a Mumbai BEST bus reversed and hit passengers standing in a queue outside Bhandup railway station late Monday night.
According to preliminary information, the driver was attempting a U-turn near the station when the bus allegedly accelerated instead of braking, ramming into commuters waiting outside the station. The accident occurred around 10.05 pm in one of the most crowded stretches near Bhandup station.
Eyewitnesses told FPJ that heavy congestion and encroachment by hawkers left little space for pedestrians, forcing many to stand on the road. Relatives of the deceased demanded accountability as police began an investigation into the incident.
The air-conditioned Olectra bus was operating on a wet lease and was on the 606 Ring Road route, BEST officials confirmed. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced ₹5 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased.
This is the second fatal BEST bus accident reported in December, raising fresh questions over commuter safety near busy railway stations.
