Mountbatten’s Plan Explained The Decision That Created India & Pakistan.
On June 3, 1947, Lord Louis Mountbatten unveiled a plan that would change the course of South Asian history forever.
Known as the Mountbatten Plan, it laid out the roadmap for the Partition of British India and the creation of two independent nations — India and Pakistan. The proposal included the division of Punjab and Bengal, referendums in key regions, the future of more than 560 princely states, and the transfer of power by August 15, 1947.
But the rushed process of Partition came at a devastating human cost. Millions were displaced, communities were torn apart, and one of the largest migrations in human history unfolded in the months that followed.
In this video, we break down what the Mountbatten Plan proposed, why Indian leaders accepted it, the controversy surrounding the Radcliffe Line, and how the decisions of June 3, 1947 continue to shape the region nearly eight decades later.
