Georgios Poulos became one of the most controversial Greek collaborators of the Second World War. After the German invasion of Greece in 1941, he aligned himself with the occupation authorities and later formed the Poulos Verband, a collaborationist battalion that operated alongside German forces during anti-partisan campaigns in northern Greece. Although presented as a force fighting communist resistance groups, the unit soon became associated with reprisals against civilians, widespread looting, village destruction, and other abuses that left a lasting mark on occupied Greece. This documentary follows Poulos’s life from his early military career and participation in the turbulent politics of interwar Greece to his dismissal from the Hellenic Army after the failed Venizelist coup of 1935. It examines how the German occupation created opportunities for collaboration, allowing Poulos to reinvent himself as a political ally of Nazi Germany before becoming one of the occupation authorities’ most trusted Greek collaborators. The film explores the formation of the Poulos Verband, its relationship with the Wehrmacht, the SS Security Service, and German occupation authorities, as well as its role in anti-partisan operations across Macedonia. It also examines the experiences of Greek civilians caught between resistance activity and German reprisals, and the lasting impact of collaboration on communities throughout the country. As Germany’s position in the war deteriorated, Poulos and his battalion withdrew with retreating German forces into Yugoslavia and Austria, remaining alongside the Third Reich until its final collapse. After the war, he was returned to Greece, where he faced trial for collaboration and was found guilty. Drawing on historical research and contemporary accounts, this documentary examines one of the most notorious collaborationist formations in occupied Greece and the complex choices, loyalties, and consequences that shaped one of the darkest chapters of the country’s wartime history.
