The transport secretary Heidi Alexander is making a statement on last week’s Heathrow airport shutdown, which was caused by a fire at the power substation.

Alexander has refused to back the chief executive of Heathrow, as she questioned if she would have gone to bed as he did after a fire broke out near the airport on Thursday night.

She said she would have struggled to sleep in Thomas Woldbye’s position, but that it was not her place to “justify decisions that Heathrow leadership did or didn’t take”.

Woldbye’s decision left one of his deputies, the chief operating officer Javier Echave, to make key decisions while the electricity substation powering the airport burnt.
