President Erdogan has said that anti-government protests over the jailing of the mayor of Istanbul have turned into a “movement of violence”.
The Turkish authorities have said they arrested more than 1,100 people during six consecutive nights of demonstrations after the imprisonment of Ekrem Imamoglu, the leading challenger to Erdogan’s two-decade rule. Demonstrations continued on Monday night with at least 43 people being arrested.
