President Donald Trump departs Washington, DC en route to Doral, Florida to attend LIV dinner.

After weeks of anticipation, second-guessing and diplomatic efforts to secure exemptions, President Trump unveiled his flagship “liberation day” tariff plan, intended to free the US from its dependence on foreign imports and foster a rebirth of American manufacturing.

The president is convinced that his strategy will bring companies “pouring into our country at levels never seen before, with jobs and money to follow”.

Despite taking a political gamble that threatens to disrupt the postwar economic order that America created, Trump was already looking ahead to the next phase of his agenda.

Addressing Republican congressional leaders, he pressed them on “taking the next step” and forcing “one big beautiful bill” through Congress.

Before Trump’s speech, Senate Republicans released a budget blueprint that would include a $1.5 trillion tax cut and a $5 trillion hike to America’s debt limit. The president said the proposal had his “full support”.

“We’ll have everything, the big tax cuts and every incentive there is, and it’ll be fantastic,” he said. “We want the tax cuts … spending cuts, energy and historic investments in defence, border and so much more. One bill is going to straighten out our country for many, many years to come.”
