Khaleda Zia’s journey from a housewife to Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister reshaped the country’s political history.
Born in 1945 in Jalpaiguri, Khaleda Zia moved to what became Bangladesh after Partition. She married army officer Ziaur Rahman, a key figure in the 1971 Liberation War and later president. After his assassination in 1981, she entered politics to lead the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
