The Assam government plans to approach the Centre to reduce the Eco-Sensitive Zone around Kaziranga National Park from the existing 10-km default restriction to a proposed 1 km. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says the move could ease development restrictions around Bokakhat. But environmentalists fear a smaller buffer could increase pressure on wildlife corridors, grasslands and the wider Kaziranga ecosystem.
The debate also comes amid controversy over luxury hotel projects near Kaziranga and the detention of activist Pranab Doley under the National Security Act.
