President Donald Trump urged Japan and six other nations to send warships to secure the Strait of Hormuz, defending not briefing allies before launching war with Iran while seated beside Prime Minister Sanai Takayichi.
With about 90% of Japan’s oil imports transiting the strait, Tokyo and European states pledged to stabilise energy markets and support safe passage, but stopped short of joining a US‑led patrol. Japan condemned Iranian attacks and urged Tehran to halt strikes on energy infrastructure.
Al Jazeera’s Kimberly Halkett reports from the White House.
