Iran and the gulf states: A history of rivalry, diplomacy, and proxy conflict

The Gulf is a strategic waterway, with nearly one-third of global seaborne oil transiting it, and a frontline in the rivalry between Iran and neighbouring Arab states.

It traces shifts from the 1971 British withdrawal and island disputes, through the 1979 revolution, the GCC’s founding and the Iran–Iraq war, to post-2003 regional realignments.
