Inside UN: France vs US Over Israel’s Actions in Lebanon

An emergency UN Security Council session, called by France, has been held amid escalating tensions between Israel and Lebanon as Israeli forces advance north of the Litani River.

The UN’s senior political affairs official warned that Israel’s presence in Lebanon raises serious concerns over sovereignty and international law, while also stressing that Hezbollah must disarm.

France took a strong stance against any form of occupation or permanent Israeli presence on Lebanese territory, warning against displacement, destruction, and restrictions on civilian return, including damage to UNESCO-listed sites in Tyre.

Lebanon accused Israel of outright occupation and urged the Security Council to respond unanimously.

The United States, meanwhile, shifted responsibility toward Hezbollah and Iran, calling for an end to attacks and greater control by the Lebanese state, while supporting ongoing US-led diplomatic talks.

With negotiations expected between Israel and Lebanon, the key question remains: can diplomacy prevent further escalation and secure a lasting ceasefire?
