Flores, Indonesia: A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the north coast of Flores early Saturday, killing 51 people and injuring 132 others. Around 5,000 people fled their homes, while at least 914 houses were severely damaged.
The earthquake also damaged 93 schools, 36 health facilities and 38 government offices. Authorities recorded at least 341 aftershocks, while several areas were left without electricity and telecommunications.
A tsunami warning was issued after residents reported the sea retreating, but authorities later lifted the warning. Waves of up to 1.6 metres were reported in coastal areas.
Rescue teams, helicopters, aircraft and naval vessels have been deployed as survivors seek food, water, medicines, tents and blankets. Indonesia has also sent 50,000 aid packages weighing 275 tonnes to Flores.
