In 1983, 60 Minutes investigated the damning effects of DES or Stilboestrol – a popular drug in the mid-20th-century given to pregnant women to prevent miscarriages. Back then, studies in the United States proved the link between women who took the drug while pregnant, and the children in utero when the drug was taken suffering from cancer later in life. In the 1980s, it was already dubbed a “medical disaster”.

In 2025, 60 Minutes continued the investigation into the catastrophic drug – now with accounts from women who were made to take DES to dry up their milk supply after being forced to give up their babies for adoption. These women have not only been plagued by life-altering diseases including cancer, but have seen their subsequent children and grandchildren suffer from serious diseases as well.
