An Indian-origin student in New Jersey is leading a campaign to distinguish the sacred Hindu ‘Swastika’ symbol from the Nazi Hakenkreuz, arguing that the two symbols have different origins, meanings, and historical significance. Mira Trivedi launched the initiative after her Year 8 teacher referred to Adolf Hitler’s emblem as the ‘Swastika’. She says her objections were dismissed, motivating her to push for changes in educational material. Trivedi has since presented a report to district officials, urging schools to adopt accurate terminology to avoid confusion and improve historical accuracy. The Year 10 student believes misidentifying the Hindu ‘Swastika’ can contribute to misconceptions about Hinduism and other Dharmic faiths and can fuel prejudice and stereotyping. She also says she has experienced subtle bullying over her religious beliefs.
