Chandigarh: Tensions escalated on Independence Day as Qaumi Insaaf Morcha protesters marched towards the Punjab Governor’s House, prompting police to use tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd. Protesters allegedly pelted stones at security personnel and attacked police barricades with sticks. The Morcha is demanding the release of detained Sikh prisoners and has been protesting at YPS Chowk since January 7, 2023. Protesters are also seeking 10-day parole for a prisoner to meet his seriously ill mother.
