Iran-backed Houthi forces have seized Yemen’s strategic Red Sea port city of Mokha and advanced toward positions near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, raising fresh concerns for global shipping and energy supplies. Mokha lies about 80 kilometres from the vital waterway, through which around 12% of global goods typically pass.
The development comes as shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains severely constrained, making Bab el-Mandeb increasingly important for Saudi oil exports and other commercial traffic. The Houthi advance could put pressure on critical maritime routes on both sides of the Arabian Peninsula and increase the risk of further disruptions to global trade and oil flows.
