Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Conservative opponent Pierre Poilievre have begun campaigning for next month’s general election against the backdrop of a trade war and annexation threats from Donald Trump. The US President has threatened tariffs on Canadian exports and has spoken multiple times about Canada becoming the fifty-first state. Carney has called the comments disrespectful and unhelpful.
