Martin Bormann was one of the most powerful figures in Nazi Germany, yet much of his influence was exercised away from public view. Working at the centre of Adolf Hitler’s regime, he controlled access to the dictator, managed his private affairs and eventually became Secretary to the Führer. His position allowed him to influence decisions affecting millions of people across German-occupied Europe. This World History documentary follows Martin Bormann from his early involvement with Germany’s nationalist far right to his rapid rise through the Nazi Party. It examines his marriage to Gerda Buch, daughter of senior Nazi official Walter Buch, his work alongside Rudolf Hess and his growing control over Hitler’s finances, the Berghof and the Obersalzberg complex near Berchtesgaden. The film also explores Bormann’s role in Nazi racial policy, including measures directed against Jews, foreign workers and Soviet prisoners of war. Through the Party Chancellery, he became an important figure in translating Hitler’s decisions into government policy and strengthening Nazi Party control during the final years of the Second World War. In 1945, Bormann followed Hitler into the Führerbunker beneath Berlin and remained there as Soviet forces closed on the German capital. His disappearance during the final days of the Third Reich created one of the enduring mysteries of the post-war era. Tried in his absence at Nuremberg, Bormann was the subject of reported sightings across Europe and South America for decades. Only the discovery of remains in Berlin and later DNA testing finally established what had happened to Hitler’s powerful private secretary.
