“Gyanesh Kaka, Dale Vote Pe Daka”: Hundreds Join Thackeray Cousins In Mumbaj Protest Against CEC

Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray led a massive joint protest march in Mumbai on October 4, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The protest also saw several unusual moments. A man dressed as Gyanesh Kumar and others wearing masks resembling the CEC were seen apologising on his behalf. One protester called himself a ‘puppet’, while another sarcastically referred to the sequence of Election Commissioners and asked whether ‘Akshay Kumar’ could be next.

The march brought together people from different constituencies, Gen Z protesters, civil society groups and workers associated with opposition parties. FPJ spoke to several participants who shared concerns about voter lists in their own constituencies. Some alleged that names had been deleted or that voters were facing difficulties related to the electoral roll revision, while others questioned how the SIR process was being carried out. Protesters demanded that the SIR exercise be scrapped.

Another striking feature of the march was the absence of individual political party flags. Following an appeal by the Thackeray brothers, supporters carried the Tricolour instead, with Raj Thackeray describing the protest as a national cause.

Raj Thackeray demanded that the SIR exercise in Maharashtra be cancelled and reiterated his demand for elections to be conducted using ballot papers instead of EVMs. Uddhav Thackeray questioned the process of appointing Election Commissioners and raised concerns over electoral roll deletions and voter rights.
