Gaza committee endorsed by Hamas and Fatah lacks political voice: Analysis

Tamer Qarmout, an associate professor of public policy, has raised questions about the announcement on reopening the Rafah crossing and the role of the Gaza committee operating under the newly launched “Board of Peace”.
Speaking about Ali Shaath’s announcement, Qarmout said the committee running Gaza under the board is made up of “technocrats”, stressing that it has little authority.
“This committee has no political mandate whatsoever,” he said. “It has been endorsed by Hamas and Fatah, but it lacks a political voice for sure and has a very limited mandate.”
Qarmout questioned how effective the arrangement could be, asking who would ultimately control Gaza’s borders and economy.
“The question is who will control goods and services and people into Gaza,” he said, noting that Israel “still holds 52 percent of Gaza”.
“Will Israel be held accountable?” he added.
